Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe.
Named after the Greek words hydro for “water” and genes for “forming,” hydrogen makes up more than 90 percent of all of the atoms, which equals three quarters of the mass of the universe, according to the Los Alamos National Laboratory Hydrogen is essential for life, and it is present in nearly all the molecules in living things.
The element also occurs in the stars and powers the universe through the proton-proton reaction and carbon-nitrogen cycle. Stellar hydrogen fusion processes release huge amounts of energy as they combine hydrogen atoms to form helium, according to Los Alamos.
Hydrogen (H+) is the first element on the periodic table, the smallest, and most basic of all elements, and the first to form after the big bang in creation. Hydrogen consists of only 1 proton and 1 electron. We all know that water is H2O or 2 hydrogen atoms attached to 1 oxygen (O) atom. As far as size, think of H+ as a pebble and the H2O molecule as a football stadium. This will be an important point later in my discussion. Obviously water, or oceans, rivers, lakes, rain etc. are most abundant source of H+ on earth and the easiest for us to obtain.
The secret that I want to share with you is this equation.
2 H2O ⇌ OH− + H3O+
Water is fluid and constantly changing form.
So looking at the equation above when 2 molecules of water come together
( 2 H2O) it is constantly shifting back and forth ( ⇌ ) from the first state
( 2 H2O ) to the second state (OH−) + ( H3O+).
H3O+ is called Hydronium and it’s health benefits will be the focus for the rest of this discussion.
The amount of hydronium (H3O+) vs hydroxide (OH−) is depend upon the PH of the water. Normal water is neutral or a ph close to 7. Alkalized water is above 7 and will increase the amount of hydroxide (OH− ) . Where as acidic water is below 7 and will increase the amount of Hydronium ( H3O+) and the ( OH−) attracts a H+ to form another water molecule.
Free Radicals, Oxidants and Antioxidants
So how could hydronium ( H3O+) be beneficial for our health?
To understand this you have to understand Free Radicals, Oxidants and the role of Antioxidants.
In the simplest terms;
Free Radicals are any atoms, ions or molecules that are missing electrons or protons making them highly reactive. Meaning they will steal electrons and/or protons from healthy stable molecules resulting in damage to that structure.
Free radicals are generated from the food we eat, medicines we take, pollution in the air and water, man made chemical and of course alcohol and cigarette.
Oxidants are oxygen atoms missing electrons making them highly reactive and they are called Reactive Oxygen. Since there are multiple forms they are called Reactive Oxygen Species or ROS’s. When they steal electrons from stable atoms the process is called Oxidation and when it is happening on a large scale throughout the body it is termed Oxidative Stress. Oxidants (ROS’s) can be man make and enter our bodies, but more importantly oxidants are generated during cellular respiration. Or more specifically when our cells convert glucose (sugar) to ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) the energy currency for our cells. So the more sugar in your diet the more ROS’s generated that must be neutralized by Antioxidants.
Antioxidant are proton and/or electron donors. Which stabilize or neutralize Free Radicals and Oxidants. Familiar antioxidants include, vitamins A, C, E, lutein, resveratrol, lycopene and other phytonutrients.
Hydronium is also considered an antioxidant. So a diet high in sugars and low in fruits and vegetables is disastrous to our health.

Why Hydronium’s Size Matters
The water content of the human body is approximately 55% for women and 60% for men depending on your size and weight. Because water by nature is constantly changing form 2 H2O ⇌ OH− + H3O+ the hydrogen atom (H+) can leave one hydronium (H3O+) molecule and jump to the next adjacent water molecule making it hydronium. This process repeats over and over until the (H+) has in effect traveled quite some distance. In another words, a large molecule, like a boat, has to push its way through water by separating water molecules. Where as (H+) quickly skips through the the water with little to no resistance until it reaches the negatively charged (-) free radical or oxidant. Then it quickly donates an electron or proton to stabilize the negatively charged free radical or oxidant.
The (H+) can even skip right into our cells or completely through our cells because of its small size. Remember it is only an atom not a molecule. Some antioxidants are to large to even enter our cells where the oxidants are being generated.

Where Do I Get Hydronium?
This is the exciting part. You can spend $60 for capsules, up to over a $1,000 for a machine to add hydrogen to your water or try this simple inexpensive trick.
- Start with distilled water. It must be distilled to be free of minerals or contaminates. Tap water is treated with calcium chloride and in some communities fluoride. Bottled water will have left over minerals not filtered out or the manufacturer may add their own electrolytes. All will interfere with 2 H2O ⇌ OH− + H3O+ equation. Distilled water is pure water only.
- Next add a slice of lemon to 16 oz of distilled water. 1/4 to 1/8 of a lemon depending on the size of the lemon. You should be able to taste the lemon.
- Drink on an empty stomach. Food in the stomach will bind with the hydrogen. Drink at least 2 times a day. First thing in the morning is great. You can drink as much as you want.
- Try it at least for 2 weeks and see if you don’t feel better. If you do continue for the rest of your life.
